Packing is often the most time-consuming part of a move. With the right technique and materials it goes both faster and safer – and the risk of damage drops. Here are our best tips, whether you pack yourself or let us handle the packing help.
The right materials make a difference
Invest in proper moving boxes of a uniform size – they stack stably and use the space in the van better. Have plenty of packing tape, bubble wrap, tissue paper and a thick marker for labelling. Use smaller boxes for heavy things like books and larger ones for light, bulky items such as cushions and duvets.
Pack systematically
Pack one room at a time and start with what you use least. Fill boxes completely but no heavier than you can lift – around 15–20 kg is about right. Put heavy items at the bottom and light ones on top. Fill empty space with soft textiles so nothing slides around.
Label every box with room and a short content note, ideally on the side so the text is visible when stacked. A box labelled "Kitchen – plates, fragile" saves a lot of time when unpacking.
Protect the fragile
Wrap glasses, china and ornaments individually in tissue paper or bubble wrap, and stand plates on edge – they withstand pressure better upright than flat. Dismantle furniture where possible and tape screws and fittings in a bag to the furniture. Photograph cables behind the TV and computer before disconnecting.
Prepare a first-night box
Pack a clearly labelled box with what you need for the first day in the new home: chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding, toilet paper, a few kitchen items and any medication. Then you avoid searching through a sea of boxes when you are tired after moving day.
