What does a moving company cost in 2025?

Hourly price, fixed price and the RUT deduction explained – with clear price examples by home size so you know what your move costs.

One of the first questions before a move is, of course, the price. The cost of a moving company is driven mainly by the size of the home, the distance between the addresses, how much needs carrying and whether you add services such as packing and move-out cleaning. In this guide we go through how the price is set, what a reasonable price is in 2025 and how the RUT deduction effectively halves your labour cost.

Hourly price or fixed price?

Moving companies usually charge in one of two ways: by the hour or with a fixed price. The hourly price is typically around SEK 500–700 per hour and mover before the RUT deduction, which is roughly SEK 250–350 after the deduction. A fixed price means you get a set sum for the whole job once the company has assessed the volume.

Our recommendation is to always ask for a fixed price. Then you know exactly what the move will land on and avoid unpleasant surprises if something takes longer than expected. A serious company is happy to give a fixed price after a short description of needs or a digital survey.

Price examples by home size

As a rough guide, a local move (same town) costs roughly the following after the RUT deduction: a studio or small flat up to 30 sqm from about SEK 2,200, a two-room flat of 30–60 sqm from about SEK 3,500, a three-room flat of 60–90 sqm from about SEK 5,000 and a larger house from about SEK 8,000 and up.

The prices assume normal access, a working lift or ground floor, and that the belongings are packed. Without a lift, with long carrying distances or very heavy goods, the price may be adjusted – which is why a correct volume estimate is important for a fair fixed price.

What affects the price?

The biggest factors are volume (cubic metres of belongings), distance, floor level and lift, plus add-ons such as packing help, move-out cleaning, storage and assembly. Timing also plays a part – month-end and summer are peak season when demand is highest.

Tip: use our volume calculator to estimate your volume before requesting a quote. That makes the price picture more accurate and helps you avoid paying for too big a van or too few movers.

How the RUT deduction halves the cost

The RUT deduction gives you a 50 percent reduction on the labour cost for moving help, packing and move-out cleaning, up to SEK 75,000 per person and year. The deduction applies only to labour – not materials, the moving van or fuel.

With a serious moving company the RUT deduction is applied directly on the invoice, so you only pay your half. You do not need to be out of pocket and wait for the Tax Agency. Read more in our separate guide on the RUT deduction for moving.

It depends on the move, but a fixed price always brings peace of mind because you know the total in advance. For an efficient move an hourly price can sometimes be cheaper, but the risk of surprises is greater.
