A successful move starts with good planning. With the right structure you avoid stress in the final days and can feel confident that everything is prepared. This moving checklist breaks the work into clear stages so you know exactly what to do and when.
2 months before the move
Give notice on your current home in writing and check the notice period. Start comparing and booking a moving company in good time – popular dates around month-end fill up fast. This is also when you should book any storage if you need to keep furniture in the interim.
Take the chance to declutter. Sell, donate or remove what you do not want to take with you. The less volume, the cheaper and smoother the move.
1 month before the move
Change your address with the Tax Agency and set up mail forwarding via the Swedish address service. Tell banks, insurers, your health centre, employer and subscriptions your new address. Book disconnection and connection of electricity, broadband and any home insurance for the new address.
Start gathering moving boxes and packing materials. Pack what you rarely use first – books, seasonal clothes and ornaments.
1 week before the move
Finish packing everything except the bare essentials. Label every box with room and contents – it saves a lot of time when unpacking. Empty, defrost and wipe out the freezer. Prepare a "first-night box" with what you need straight away: chargers, toiletries, bedding and a few kitchen items.
Confirm the time and details with the moving company and make sure there is parking for the moving van at both addresses.
On moving day
Be present when the moving team arrives and show what should go. Keep valuables, important documents and keys with you. Go through the home one last time – do not forget the storeroom, balcony and attic or cellar space.
Once everything is in place in the new home: check that nothing is missing or damaged before you sign off. Then all that remains is to start unpacking – and perhaps book move-out cleaning of the old home.
